Design meets Natural Stone
After 70 years working day in, day out with natural stone, it’s fair to say we know it pretty well. And we also know that not all stone is equal. Every quarry, even the sections inside a quarry, creates its own unique set of conditions which dictates the color, composition and quality of the stone contained within. Generally speaking, the best material is found in the most inaccessible areas of a quarry, but we believe that product quality starts at the source, which is why we go to (sometimes extreme) lengths to find the perfect block. That means that the stone we use is more chemically stable so it won’t discolor over the years, and will be less susceptible to external atmospheric factors such as oxidation.
Salvatori Design Philosophy
The word “marble” is often used interchangeably ith “natural stone” and is all too often considered either old-fashioned or ostentatious. Our approach is to transform it into discreet, understated products which nevertheless create a wow effect. That doesn’t have to mean highly polished and opulent. Instead, we tend towards subdued, matt finishes, just as stone is found in its natural habitat. After all, how many shiny mountains do you see? We may be biased but we believe stone is an incredible gift of nature, and with the right touch can be extraordinarily elegant and contemporary.
Why choose natural stone?
Unique and real
In a world where “real” is increasingly difficult to find and manmade, cookie-cutter solutions and products are more and more prevalent, natural stone is just that: natural. No two blocks, slabs or tiles are alike, with each possessing its own unique DNA in the form of veining, fossils, minerals and history. And it is these diverse elements which also contribute to another inimitable aspect of stone: its extraordinary tactility.
Natural stone is also extraordinarily durable, strong and long-lasting. After all, the Ancient Greeks and Romans, who knew a thing or two about beauty and design, built some of history’s most enduring buildings and pieces of art using stone. Simply look at the floors of ancient churches and you’ll see how the stone remains beautiful and relevant today despite the hundreds of thousands of feet that have trodden on them across the centuries.
Its inherent strength and natural credentials mean that, unlike most mass-produced tiles, stone lends itself to a zero joint, preserving the fluidity and aesthetic of the surface.
Salvatori is an award-winning Italian design company specializing in natural stone. From innovative textures for walls and floors to bathroom items and products for the home such as tables, lighting and accessories, we are considered by many as the benchmark in the “design meets natural stone” field. Drawing on the very best of Made in Italy values and cutting-edge engineering and technological know-how, Salvatori fuses old-fashioned craftsmanship with contemporary design. Whilst many of our products are the result of partnerships with internationally noted designers, what lies at the heart of all we do is a deep-rooted passion and respect for the inherent beauty of natural stone, and its defining characteristic: that no two pieces can ever be identical, meaning that every single product has its own unique history. Working with clients that count among them Armani, Bergdorf Goodman, Salvatore Ferragamo, John Pawson, Sir David Adjaye and Bottega Veneta, we pride ourselves on providing much more than mere product. We work alongside our partners right from the beginning of a project, with advice on the stone itself, design, engineering, installation and care.
Salvatori has worked closely with architects, designers and builders to provide not only practical support, but also inspiring new ways to work with stone which often challenge traditional thinking. Innovation is entrenched in the DNA of the company, and in fact we scored a world first right back in our earliest days when founder Guido Salvatori invented the Split Face (Spaccatello) finish in 1950. In 2010 we created the groundbreaking Lithoverde®, the world’s first recycled stone, a product which is not only unique and beautiful, but also makes a positive contribution to the environment, using up pieces of precious natural stone which would otherwise be discarded.
Today the third generation continues the story of innovation with CEO Gabriele Salvatori and his brother Guido at the helm.
